About My Campaign

Did you know that 17-25 year olds are over-represented in road trauma, and have the highest overall fatality and hospitalised injury rate in Australia?

As part of the Re:act program, we were challenged to create a positive campaign message to raise awareness among young people about the importance of wearing seatbelts and wearing it correctly. My ‘Seatbelts are Mandatory’ campaign was the selected 2025 Re:act campaign in South Australia.

My campaign message “Seatbelts are accessories Mandatory” serves as a reminder that seatbelts aren’t a car’s accessory but purposefully designed and tested to protect our bodies and reduce the risk of serious injury or death in a crash.

The tagline also reinforces that wearing a seatbelt as a driver or a passenger is both mandatory and important, reflected in the consequences for not wearing your seatbelt.

Why do we wear seatbelts?

Wearing a seatbelt reduces your risk of fatal and non-fatal injuries by 60% for drivers or front seat passengers and 44% for back seat passengers.

It doesn’t matter if you’re driving in a local street at 40 km/h or 100km/h on a highway, if the driver brakes suddenly or there’s a crash, wearing your seatbelt could be the difference to walking away or being seriously injured, or worse.

Prioritising our well-being on the road and practising safe driving behaviours are simple but powerful ways to make every journey safer for you and everyone else.

What can you do?

Action starts with us.

Educate yourself and others on the correct way to wear a seatbelt. The seatbelt is only effective if worn correctly. The top of the seatbelt should be on the shoulder, and the belt must be properly adjusted for the wearer.

Make wearing a seatbelt a habit, even on short trips. By doing so, you set a positive example for others to follow.

It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure your passengers are wearing their seatbelt correctly. However, passengers above 16 years are also accountable for wearing or not wearing their seatbelt.

Lastly, speak up if you see someone not wearing their seatbelt or wearing it incorrectly. By reminding others, you are reinforcing safety rules and promoting safe driving behaviours.

About

Hi, I’m Nabila Mazwardi from South Australia and the designer of this campaign. I really appreciate the time you’ve taken to learn more about my campaign which I’ve worked hard to create and become very proud of.

Through this project, I was shocked to learn how many young people are injured in car crashes. Since then, I’ve been asking everyone I know about their seatbelt habits, and I’m relieved to find out that they are all responsible about wearing them! It also made me realise that I haven’t seen an advertisement about the importance of seatbelts in a while and specifically aimed towards young people.

I was nervous but super excited about this project and enjoyed the entire process and the people I’ve worked with!
